2018 Track & Field Games
Monday, April 23 – The 2018 Track & Field Games were held on the 19th and 20th of April at Sias' Track & Field Stadium. The chief guests at the Opening Ceremony were Senior Director of HTC Corporation, Diego Miralles; Managing Partner and Head of Electronics at Siniger LLC USA, Vasil Petrov; Vice President of the World Dance Council (WDC), Yuan Bin; and Postgraduate Tutor and Professor at the Beijing Dance Academy, Zhang Pingdeng. The Sias leadership including the Chairman of the Board of Sias, Dr. Shawn Chen, Party Secretary, Ma Jiansheng, President, Dr. Chen Sikun, Executive Vice President, Dong Qiming, Vice President, Liu Shuqin, Deputy Party Secretary, Li Huafeng, and Assistant Principals, Sun Rujian and Guo Xuede, was in attendance. The Track & Field Stadium was filled with thousands of students and teachers for the Opening Ceremony.
Sias Vice President, Liu Shuqin, presided over the festivities of the 2018 Track & Field Games. After a parade by the Sias Military Marching Band, there were performances by the Sias Cheerleading Team, and the Sias Dance Troupe. This was followed by the parade of contestants that involved students and employees of Sias in their respective groups, including the Judges, academic teams, the foreign faculty, logistics department, and athletic teams from the Schools at Sias.
After the playing of the Chinese and American national anthems, the Chairman of the Board of Sias, Dr. Shawn Chen, introduced the chief guests, and then lit the torch to symbolize the spirit and hope of Sias. Sias President, Dr. Chen Sikun delivered the opening speech and wished the athletes and judges. He said that development through sports was a crucial part of the National Education policy and was an important part of the "Spiritual Civilization" at universities and schools. He said that sports teaches the youth specific ideals, skills, and responsibilities, that would serve and enhance the nation in the future. The development of sports, he said, was crucial for China as a nation on the global stage. Sias has supported extra-curricular activities throughout its 20-year history. The Sias Cheerleading Team won the 2017 National Cheerleading League, and the team from Sias won 3 gold medals at the 10th National University Dragon & Lion Dance Championships. Sias students have also won at the provincial level, including 9 medals at the Henan University Students' Wushu Competition, the Henan University Students' Badminton Competition (in women’s singles and doubles), and the Henan Aerobics Dance Competition. Participants at the 2018 Track & Field Games are encouraged to carry on the spirit of the Olympics and follow and respect the rules, the referees' judgements, and yet maintain their competitive edge.
After the athlete's representative's oath and the referee's representative's oath, several large-scale performances were held to mark the beginning of the Games. Party Secretary, Ma Jiansheng, then announced that the 2018 Track & Field Games were officially open.
After 2 days of events, the 2018 Track & Field Games were brought to a close. Sias leaders, Ma Jiansheng, Chen Sikun, Dong Qiming, Liu Shuqin, Li Huafeng, and Guo Xuede attended the Closing Ceremony. Heads of all the relevant departments and a stadium full of students were also present. The Dean of the School of Physical Education, He Zuxin, announced the final results of the two-day event. The Deputy Director of the Academic Affairs Office, Ding Gongci, announced the winners of the Spiritual Civilization Awards. The school leaders then presented awards to the top athletes and schools at the Games.
Party Secretary, Ma Jiansheng, delivered the closing speech. He said that the Games had been a success and that the competitiveness and competition had been very healthy for Sias. He said that the unity that sport brought to Sias was very valuable. He said that he hoped that the students would pursue their academics with the same drive and passion that they had shown over the course of the 2018 Track & Field Games.
