Sias Prof. Wu Xiuzhi awarded 70th Anniversary Medal

Thursday, September 26 - Professor Wu Xiuzhi, from Sias University's School of Music & Opera, was awarded a Commemorative Medal for the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the State Council, and the Central Military Commission. Prof. Wu Xiuzhi, who has been a member of the Sias faculty for over 17 years, took part in the revolution in China in June, 1949.

For the past 60 years, Prof. Wu Xiuzhi initiated the "Three-in-One" music education model, commissioned by Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai, to create a vocal music concept that was deeply rooted in the Central Plains of China. This initiative had a pioneering significance. Prof. Wu devoted herself to research and innovation in teaching methods as well as the nurturing of talent. She has made important contributions to music education as well as the music industry in China.

On the 24th of December, 2016, at Sias University, the Propaganda Department of the Henan Provincial Party Committee, the Henan Cultural Department, and the Henan Literature & Art Association, sponsored a performance of Prof. Wu's "Three-in-One" model. Members of the Propaganda Department of the Henan Provincial Party Committee, and the Provincial Cultural Federation, as well as leaders from departments in the Ministry of Propaganda & Culture, and national art colleges and academies, attended the performance and seminar.

Professor Wu Xiuzhi was born in Xiping County, in the province of Henan, in March, 1932. She is a renowned music educator in China and was the former Vice President of the China National Vocal Music Association, the Vice President of the Henan Musicians Association, the Honorary Dean of Henan University's College of Art, and a judge on CCTV's National Young Singers Competition. She is credited with creating the "False Vocal Position Singing Method" in China, and her "Three-in-One" music education model has been adopted across China. For her efforts, she was awarded the "National Excellent Teaching Achievement Award." The Propaganda Department of the Henan Provincial Party Committee decided that Professor Wu Xiuzhi's teaching achievements made an important contribution to the establishment and development of Henan Province's "Chinese Vocal School", and that her achievements were "important achievements of reform and opening-up on the cultural front of Henan Province". Her falsetto singing technique, known as the "Wu Xiuzhi Singing Style" was deemed to have enriched the vocal music teaching and vocal music singing form, and significantly promoted the development of Chinese vocal music art. In addition to her personal achievements, Prof. Wu has been teaching for over half a century and has trained thousands of students who now work in universities, and state-level and provincial-level literary and art organizations across China.
