Trio completes Shanghai half-marathon
Two instructors and one student from Sias International University completed the 2007 Toray Cup International half-marathon in Shanghai on Nov. 25. Drew Tilson paced the trio finishing the 21-kilometer course in 1 hour, 54.06 seconds. He was followed by Lyndi Milton (1:54.54) and senior Andy Chen (2:14.55). Zhao Yang of China won the men’s half-marathon in 1:05.41, and China’s Dong Xiao Qin paced the women in 1:13.05. According to the official race website, more than 20,000 runners lined up that cool November morning at Century Park to meander through the streets of Shanghai. “It was perfect running weather,” said Milton, who ran a half-marathon in Beijing earlier in the year. “All along the course there were traditional drums and old ladies with pompoms.” The large amount of people and sometimes narrow streets of Shanghai caused a few bottlenecks along the route. Runners had to maneuver through the streets and pockets of joggers who slowed to walkers. “I think Lyndi did a great job of training us,” Tilson said. “We didn’t just train at one pace, so we could cut in and out. I think it helped give me an extra boost at the end.” Despite battling the crowds and a cold, Milton was able to turn in a personal-best time. She ran the race in a pair of running shorts that her dad used to run in and wanted to finish well. “The last 5-kilometers I got nauseous. They were kind of rough,” she said. “I really wanted to walk. I knew Drew was about a minute ahead and I really wanted to catch him. I don’t think I could have run it any harder.” Celebrating with the trio at the end of the race was a group of fellow instructors Kelly Coker, Shellie Marriott, Amber McDonald and Steven Sumner.
