Recently, a Sias delegation including 6 Academic Affairs officers and 4 student leaders has completed the training for the theory and skill of university student behavioral health prevention co-sponsored by Sias foundation and Southwest Behavioral Health Services in America. And they have returned to Sias.
During the 4-week training, combining with their research direction and expertise, 7 experienced experts from Southwest Behavioral Health Services took open and interactive teaching methods, to instruct some very practical courses for the delegation, including the theory and skill of university student mental counseling, the theory and practice of prevention and correction of alcohol, tobacco, and internet addiction, good interpersonal relationship establishment and adjustment, effective identification and intervention of the crowd with major mental crisis, for example, suicide. Representative of Sias introduced the new achievements of students’ mental health education and consulting work of our university and discussed the differences between students of Chinese and American universities, the common issues of mental health education and prevention, training team and next development of the prevention center. In order to enhance the learning effectiveness and improve the practical working ability, the delegation also traveled to one local primary school to do the field trip of behavioral health prevention work.
The end of the training coincided with the Chinese New Year. Dr. Sawn Chen paid a special visit the delegation, and celebrated the New Year with them. After the training, a brief but solemn graduation ceremony was held, and Mr. Jeff Jed, president of the Southwest Behavioral Health Services, awarded certificates to the members. They also toured Washington, New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Princeton University and other famous cities and universities.
Situated in the Phoenix, Arizona, Southwest Behavioral Health Services is a non-profit comprehensive mental health services funded by the government. There are more than 700 senior behavioral health experts in it. In 2010, Southwest Behavioral Health Services and Sias jointly established the psychological prevention center, and the training program of the center was authenticated by the the Board of the National Health Education Consultant. More than 30000 children received service each year.
