Sias University's School of Foreign Languages, founded in August 2007, is a professional academic school for the teaching of foreign languages and academic research, based on the former Department of Foreign Languages. At present, the school has a Department of Business English, Department of Translation, Department of Japanese, and Department of College English Teaching. There are 4 majors - Business English, English Translation, English Education, and Business Japanese. Courses are available in four languages - English, Japanese, French, and German. The school has 2,932 students. The Department of College English Teaching carries out Public English courses.
The English Language & Literature program was included in the 8th batch of 'Key Disciplines' in the province of Henan, and it is the only provincial-level English Language & Literature program among all private colleges and universities in Henan. The Translation major is listed as a key training discipline. Since 2012, the English major program in cooperation with Zhengzhou University has jointly recruited and trained postgraduates with Master's Degrees. In 2015, it was approved as a 'Brand Major' among private colleges and universities in Henan. In 2019, it was approved as a 'Funded Project' for Academic Course Creation in colleges and universities in Henan. It ranked 12th in the second batch of the 44 colleges and universities in Henan and 1st among private colleges and universities. In 2020, it was approved as a first-class undergraduate major in Henan. The Japanese major ranked 5th in the second batch of the 21 universities in Henan, and 1st among private colleges and universities. The Comprehensive English Course is designated as a First-class Undergraduate Course (online and offline hybrid) in Henan. The College English Course was designated an Excellent Resource Sharing Course and an Excellent Online Open Course in Henan. It won the second prize for Excellent Online Teaching Courses in Undergraduate Education in Henan. The Teaching & Research Section of College English and the Basic English Teaching & Research Section are both classed as Excellent Grass-roots Teaching Organizations in Henan. The Translation Teaching & Research Office is classified as an Excellent Teaching Organization among colleges and universities in the Zhengzhou metropolitan area.
There are 3 research institutes: the Research Institute of Translation Studies, the Research Institute of Foreign Literature and Culture, and the Research Institute of Foreign Languages; 2 teaching teams: the College English Teaching Team, and the Brand Specialty Teaching Team in Private College & Universities; and 2 innovative teams: the Critical Thinking Training Team, and the Characteristic English Interpretation Research & Innovation Team.
The School of Foreign Languages has a wide range of educational resources and a well-educated and well-structured team of Chinese and foreign teachers. There are 177 full-time teachers including 129 Chinese teachers and 48 foreign teachers. Among the Chinese teachers, there are 8 professors and 54 associate professors, accounting for 48% of the total number. Among the full-time teachers, there are 6 teachers with Doctoral degrees (3 foreign PhDs), 129 teachers with Master's degrees (14 foreign Master's degrees), and 43 Chinese teachers with international education backgrounds. The advantages and integration of Chinese and foreign cultures and the educational resources are focused on broadening students' horizons, and nurturing an international consciousness, innovative spirit, and practical ability. Students are highly competitive in the Postgraduate Entrance Examination and their employment rate is high, highlighting the unique international education at the School of Foreign Languages.
The School of Foreign Languages prioritizes teaching and research. Under the university's educational philosophy of 'East-meets-West' and its goal of producing international compound talent with a high level of fluency in English, the school focuses on improving the teaching quality as a key aspect of its sustained development. It implements training programs, modern curricula, and offers a variety of academic avenues. By standardizing the teaching management and implementing a wide range of reforms, the school has ensured that the theory, innovative consciousness, and practical ability of the students is continually improving.
From 2015 to 2020, the Faculty of the School of Foreign Languages has undertaken 1 national-level project, 15 provincial and ministerial projects, and 115 prefecture-level projects. They have won 88 prefecture-level scientific research awards, published 109 monographs, translations, and textbooks, and have published 517 academic papers.
The School of Foreign Languages has a student-centered management philosophy. While focusing on the students' political ideology, ideals, morality, discipline, and mental health, the school also respects students' personalities and helps them develop outside the classroom through extracurricular activities such as speeches, debates, performances, and sports. The school is involved in campus-wide activities such as the International Culture Week, Parents' Day, and the Women's Symposium. The school has formed an integrated cultural atmosphere with Chinese and foreign cultures to improve students' quality, skills, interpersonal communication, and adaptability.
From 2015 to 2020, the employment rate for graduates of the School of Foreign Languages has remained over 95%, ranking first in the country. Graduates are engaged in business, translation, foreign affairs, and education, among many other fields.
