Sias International University celebrated its annual Homecoming on May 28. The celebration included a parade, musical and dance performances, guest lectures, academic conferences, forums for parents, a 'Birdman Contest,' and the first 'Fluorescent Run' in the evening.
The Homecoming Parade began at 8 a.m. with colorful floats made by Sias schools, departments, foreign teachers, clubs, and associations. The parade was viewed by dignitaries and the general public outside the Administration building. In addition to the floats, there were minor performances and interactions with the dignitaries.
The festivities then moved to the Opera Performance Theater for a series of musical performances and dances. There were speeches by Dr. Shawn Chen, the Chairman of the Board of Sias; Dr. Sonal Minocha, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Bournemouth University; Dr. Alan Brown, President of the Sias Foundation (who also presented scholarships); Li Xinru, Director of New Media in Henan; and Ma Dongjie, Representative of the Parents. Fort Hays State University (FHSU) President, Dr. Mirta Martin, presented Sias with gifts, following which, long-serving music teacher, Gregory Hotrum was awarded the 'Man of Merit Award,' and several students were awarded scholarships as well. The performances that followed included a variety of dances ranging from the traditional, such as the Chinese lion dance, flower dance, Laos dance, and Uyghur dance, to the modern.
After the performances, Dr. Chen met with members of the Parents Association to discuss the running of Sias and to look to the future of the University. He also met with the Sias Alumni Association and several former students of Sias.
In the afternoon, there were several activities for students such as a basketball invitational, a debate contest, and the Birdman contest, all culminating in the evening's 'Fluorescent Run'.
