Sias University held a tree-planting ceremony on the occasion of China's 43rd Arbor Day, on March 12. The purpose of the tree planting was both environmental protection and the promotion of environmental education at the university. Over 200 university leaders and representatives of faculty and students took part. Sias Party Secretary, Ma Jiansheng, Executive President, Wang Jialin, Deputy Party Secretary, Li Huafeng, Vice President, Xu Shengdao, and Vice President, and Chairman of the Trade Union, Wu Hua, participated in the activity. The General Manager of the Logistics Department, Ding Gongci, presided over the ceremony.
Ma Jiansheng delivered a speech at the ceremony. He pointed out the importance of studying and understanding President Xi Jinping's ideas about environmental ecology and the measures for improving the quality of the environment. Sias has attached great importance to afforestation and has achieved remarkable results in creating gardens on its campus. He said that the Arbor Day ceremony, which involved voluntary tree planting, aimed to implement concepts of green development with practical action so that teachers and students would learn that tree planting was not only for the beautification of the campus but also an educational activity for advocating green development as a social responsibility. He said that he hoped that through this activity, teachers, and students would learn the importance of energy conservation and environmental protection as well. In addition to this, he added that the activities would nurture a spirit of cooperation and mutual assistance.
At the tree planting site, university leaders, teachers, and students took part in coordinated activities of digging, burying, and watering. After nearly an hour's work, many new trees were planted.
The Logistics Department planned and organized the entire event. They coordinated the planting of saplings and trees, the leveling of the land, planning for planting, and the purchase of planting tools and equipment.
In 1979, the 6th session of the 5th National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China adopted the resolution on the unfolding of a nationwide voluntary tree-planting campaign. The resolution established Arbor Day. The People's Republic of China celebrates Arbor Day annually on March 12.
