In commemoration of the 89th anniversary of the September 18th Incident, also known as the Mukden Incident, Sias University held a flag-raising ceremony on the morning of September 18. Sias Deputy Party Secretary, Li Huafeng, attended the ceremony, as did the heads of the Department of Learning & Work, Communist Youth League, academic schools, and residential colleges. Freshmen, representatives of the Communist Youth League, and members of the Student Union also attended the ceremony.

The ceremony began with the Sias Marching Band playing the national anthem of the People's Republic of China, followed by the raising of the flag by the Sias Honor Guard. This was followed by a speech by the Student Representative of Huanyu Residential College, Jin Yajie. She called on students to remain patriotic even in an era of peace and stability.

Li Huafeng delivered a speech in which he spoke of the events of the September 18th Incident, and of those who lost their lives in the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). He encouraged students to be patriotic, to be involved with the development of the state, and to constantly seek self-improvement. He said that he hoped that every student would face difficulties, forge ahead in the name of the nation, and work towards the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
