July 2, 2020

On July 1, Sias University's Student Affairs Office held a meeting to review the work of the General Office of the Residential Colleges for the 2019/20 academic year. The Founder, and Chairman of the Board of Sias, Dr. Shawn Chen, and Vice President, Xu Shengdao, were present at the meeting along with leaders and representatives of the Party Committees at Sias, the Student Affairs Office, the General Office of the Residential Colleges, the Supervision & Audit Department, Academic Affairs Office, and Human Resources Department. The Deputy Director of the Student Affairs Office, and Executive Vice President of the General Office of the Residential Colleges, Chu Jinjin, presided over the meeting.

Xu Shengdao delivered the opening speech. He said that after Sias University had fully implemented the Residential College system, the older education and student management modes had been broken. He said that it was important that a scientific and systematic design was employed to construct a new mechanism of collaborative education and an organizational structure of student management under the dual academy system - academic schools and residential colleges. At present, the university had implemented the principles of collaborative education under the dual academy system - academic schools and residential colleges - at Sias University. The management measures under the "dual tutors" system - academic tutors and educational tutors - highlighted the educational themes and the unique brand of Sias University. After the practice and experience of the first year of the residential college system at Sias, he said that the next step was to focus on themes, highlight the brand of Sias, and give due diligence to the educational aspects of the residential colleges, particularly a quality education, development, and improvement.

After the Vice President's speech, the leaders and Deputy Party Secretaries of the Party Committees of each of the residential colleges presented reports based on the objectives, measures, curriculum, and achievements during the 2019/20 academic year.

Following the presentation of reports, Dr. Chen delivered a speech. He spoke of his appreciation of the hard work and achievements made by the residential colleges in education and creating their unique brands in the 2019/20 academic year. Dr. Chen then put forward 4 suggestions:

- the thematic activities of some residential colleges were not consistent with their themes. He said that this required improvement as all residential colleges should work towards building their own unique brands.

- the university should formulate and regulate the standards at the residential colleges at every level by regularly carrying out assessments.

- residential colleges were not only a place for educating people but were also an academic platform. Communist Party leaders of each residential college should carry out the exploration and innovation of careers through this platform.

- the basic outline of the education model of the residential colleges at Sias University has been formed. The next step involved inviting top domestic experts to help improve it, so as to ensure the scientific and forward-thinking educational philosophy of the university.

The meeting provided a platform for exchanges and learning between the academies, and an opportunity for the leaders to get guidance from the Chairman of the Board, Dr. Chen. The leaders of the academies reaffirmed their commitment to the open and innovative spirit of Sias.
