First Day of Online Classes

February 24, 2020

The Spring Semester of the 2019/20 academic year at Sias University began on February 24, 2020. According to the directives and arrangements of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the State Council, the Henan Provincial Party Committee, the Henan Government, the Provincial Higher Education Commission, and the Henan Department of Education, all classes were to be conducted online without any delay to the academic schedule, because of the Covid-19 epidemic.

According to the new teaching arrangements, there will be 1,123 online classes on the first day of the semester, which includes 386 courses, involving 564 teachers.

Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic, Sias University has followed the instructions from President Xi Jinping's speech on the prevention and control of epidemics. In accordance with the requirements of the Central Committee's decision and the Ministry of Education's directives to move all classes, teaching, and management online, Sias has helped teachers find and create innovative teaching methods to ensure that students continue learning through the integration of modern technology and education.

In order to ensure the orderly and smooth functioning of education and teaching during the Covid-19 epidemic, and to effectively implement the teaching plans and ensure the quality of education, Sias has made full use of the technology at its disposal and has established special teaching groups to aid teachers with online teaching. As a part of the Covid-19 prevention and control system implemented at Sias University, teaching support groups, task groups, technical service groups, and quality supervision and evaluation teams were set up. Online teaching platforms such as Fanya and Sakai were adopted to help carry out online teaching. An improved management process was implemented to ensure that there is timely progress of the courses and smooth channels for communication and feedback are available. Platform support and technical support were also provided to aid the online live teaching, synchronized classrooms, online exchanges, independent learning, assessments and evaluations, and other teaching activities. There was also a focus on teacher training so that the rules for teaching on online platforms were observed, particularly with regard to online discussions, Q&As, guidance, and homework correction.

It is hoped that the faculty and students will successfully be able to perform their duties through their own initiatives and those of the university, overcome the difficulties brought about by the Covid-19 epidemic, and ensure the smooth progress of the semester through online classes and teaching.
