The 2nd AUAP (Association of Universities of Asia and the Pacific) Inter-University Basketball Championships began at Sias International University's Basketball Arena on September 17. Basketball teams from 10 universities across the Asia-Pacific region came for the championships.
The Chairman of the Board of Sias, Dr. Shawn Chen, Sias President, Chen Sikun, Executive President, Wang Jialin, Deputy Party Secretary, Li Huafeng, Vice President, Wu Hua, and Assistant Principal, Guo Xuede, were present for the opening ceremony. Representatives and leaders of the AUAP, Zhejiang University, and Zhengzhou University, among others, were also present.
Dr. Shawn Chen delivered the opening speech and welcomed the guests and participating teams, on behalf of Sias. He said that basketball was a sport that honed one's strength, endurance, and will, and these Championships were a bridge of friendship between member nations and universities.
Subsequently, there were speeches by the President of the Mater's Institute Development Academic and Seminary (Philippines), and member of the Advisory Council of the AUAP, Dr. Roland Garcia; and the President of Notre Dame of Jolo College (Philippines). They thanked Sias for hosting the tournament and hoped that it would be a resounding success.
Representatives of the players and referees swore oaths to abide by the rules of the game and compete fairly.
In the opening game, Sias International University defeated Notre Dame of Jolo College. The final score was 106-66.
Organized and sponsored by the AUAP, and hosted by Sias, the 2nd AUAP Inter-University Basketball Championships promotes the spread of basketball, aims at improving the standard, and promotes exchanges between university basketball teams both within China and in the Asia-Pacific region.
The tournament will be held from September 17 to 24. Teams from universities in Thailand, Iran, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Taiwan are participating, along with teams from China including Sias International University, Zhengzhou University, Henan University, and the Hubei University of Technology.
