Sias University held its first 'Concerto Competition' on May 25. National first-class conductor, Zhang Yue, and the Sias University Symphony performed a concerto and an aria with students. The Founder, and Chairman of the Board of Sias, Dr. Shawn Chen, attended the concert with the heads of the School of Music & Opera, and the Office of International Affairs (OIA). Professor from the School of Music & Opera at the University of Arizona, Lang Xiaoming, presided over the event.
Eight students from the University of Arizona's 2+2 program at Sias' School of Music & Opera were given the chance to perform with the Sias Symphony. The concert showcased various styles including those from the Baroque period and Romantic period as well as string, woodwind, brass, and vocal arias from composers such as Handel, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Saint-Saëns.
Student concerts are common at the School of Music & Opera. Through cooperation with the Sias Symphony and under the guidance of music directors, students learn classical music works completely, but also learn the intricacies of rhythm, phrasing, breathing, and dialogue in vocal performances. The goal is to give them the experience of stage performance, transforming them from students to musicians.
Classical music concerts are an important part of the education of members of the Sias Symphony. It also teaches students at Sias to have an appreciation for the arts. Students in the program will master a large number of orchestral works and performances through their four-year undergraduate degree, which gives them an advantage with employment after their graduation. The 'Concerto Competition' is not only the first of its kind at Sias but is also the first student Concerto competition among universities in Henan.
The Concerto Competition is to become a regular feature at Sias' School of Music & Opera, giving students a new platform for performances.
