In order to enrich the cultural life of Sias students, create a strong atmosphere of English learning, and improve student’ comprehensive English literacy, the Sias English Corner Phase Two was held in France Garden on September 27. With the theme of “Cultivation Development: Unleashing Potential, Creating a Better Future,” the event was jointly organised by Student Affairs Office, Administration Office of Sias Residential Colleges and Zhi Shan Residential College. Professor Li Hua, Founder and President of ELITE Innovation College Cambridge and former President of Sias University, Professor Lucy Lu, Provost and Vice President of Sias University attended the event, while administrative leaders of Zhishan Residential College and other residential colleges, foreign teachers, international students and Chinese student representatives participated in the event activities.

At the beginning of the event, two international student hosts introduced in detail the significance of English Corner and the innovative culture of Zhishan Residential College. Students who have yielded results in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship shared their experience, as a wonderful prelude of this feast of knowledge and exchange.

Prof. Li Hua reviewed the history of Sias English Corner and emphasized the importance of learning English and broadening international perspectives in the current context of globalization. He encouraged students to inherit the innovative genes of Sias, build the courage to challenge, and dare to break through each barrier.

After listening to Prof. Li Hua’s speech, participants held group discussions on three core topics: “The Cornerstone of Innovative Thinking,” “How to Create a Culture of Innovation (including a Culture of Tolerance for Failure),” and “How to Enhance Personal Innovation (Including Stimulating Innovation Potential).” In the sharing and display session, everyone expressed their opinions, spoke enthusiastically, and expressed their opinions in fluent English.

Prof. Lucy Lu participated in the whole process of students’ discussions. She pointed out that innovation is everywhere, and trying something new from the little things everyday is a part of innovation. Citing learning English as an example, Professor Lu pointed out that many people are afraid to communicate for fear of making mistakes, but it is this fear of mistakes that hinders our progress. She encouraged all students to put aside their worries, be brave enough to express their ideas and opinions in English, and continue to learn and improve through communication.

2024 Sias English Corner aims to enrich students’ extracurricular life, stimulate students’ enthusiasm for learning English, help everyone reduce the tension and fear when speaking English in an informal, low-pressure environment, and enhance students’ confidence in using English. Sias English Corner will be held every two weeks, following phase one at Boya Residential College, which has been unanimously recognized and praised by all participants.
