On December 5, 2024, the Office of International Affairs hosted the preliminary session of a series of Research Seminars for the academic staff and students of Sias University.

This series aims to motivate and mentor individuals interested in conducting research, providing essential tools and knowledge while fostering the exchange of experiences among research experts and fellow academics.

The event featured distinguished speakers: Professor Lucy Lu, Provost and Vice President of Sias University; Dr. Chu Jinjin, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages; Prof. Paul Maweu at Kansas International School; Dr. Gary Lee Todd, Professor of History at Sias; and Ms. Olta Myslimi, Lecturer at Kansas International School.

Professor Lucy Lu opened the seminar with an engaging discussion on the purpose of universities: cultivating and transforming learners' minds through teaching, learning, and research. She emphasized the critical role of research in enhancing education by integrating academic advancements into teaching practices. Highlighting five key aspects of research—such as developing critical thinking skills, fostering growth, and building networks—she illustrated how research inspires innovation and strengthens academic communities. Drawing on her experience as editor-in-chief in the UK, Prof. Lu shared insights from recent meetings with leaders at institutions like Oxford University and the University of Bath, underscoring the value of global academic partnerships.

Dr. Chu Jinjin highlighted the importance of research, urging academics and students to participate actively in research initiatives. She advocated for a collaborative approach, inviting attendees to work closely with her and other faculty members to advance shared goals.

Prof. Paul Maweu shared his inspiring academic journey, from earning his Ph.D. to becoming a recognized expert in his field. He encouraged attendees to pursue their research passions and collaborate to mentor those in the early stages of their academic careers.

Dr. Gary Todd recounted his experience in writing the book Henan - Focal Point of Chinese History, published by Henan University Press, and recalled the effort that went into the research and writing process. Both he and Professor Maweu underscored the personal and institutional benefits of publishing, including enhancing Sias University's international reputation.

Ms. Olta Myslimi concluded the seminar with reflections on the transformative power of research for academia and society. She encouraged attendees to start small, collaborate, and seek mentorship, emphasizing that impactful research begins with meaningful questions and requires persistence.

The seminar concluded with a call to action, inspiring faculty and students to engage in research endeavors. This initiative aims to strengthen Sias University's global reputation, promote professional development, and nurture a culture of innovation and inquiry.
