On the evening of May 25, the opening ceremony of the 2026 SIAS Intercontinental Basketball Tournament was held at the University’s Comprehensive Sports Arena. Five international teams from Australia, Hungary, Singapore, Malaysia, and Montenegro joined the SIAS University team to compete in the tournament, bringing together young athletes from around the world in a spirit of sportsmanship and friendship.
Dr.shawn chen, Founder and Chairman of the Board of SIAS University, attended the opening ceremony and delivered welcoming remarks. The ceremony was hosted by Yue Junliang, Director of the Office of International Affairs.

In his remarks, Dr. shawn chen extended a warm welcome to all participating teams and distinguished guests. He noted that sports serve as a bridge that transcends national boundaries and cultural differences, and that basketball competitions are not only a test of determination and teamwork but also an important platform for international youth to engage in mutual learning, cultural exchange, and friendship-building.
He emphasized the University’s longstanding commitment to cultivating globally minded young people who respect cultural diversity and possess an international outlook. He encouraged all athletes to embody the spirit of sportsmanship by competing fairly, learning from one another, and building friendships through basketball. He also expressed his hope that participants would showcase their talents, grow through competition, experience the richness of campus life and Chinese culture, and create lasting memories during their time at SIAS University.

Ben Andrews, team leader of the delegation from the University of Melbourne, delivered remarks on behalf of all participating teams. He noted that sports transcend language, culture, and geography, and that the tournament represents not only a competitive athletic event but also a valuable opportunity for cultural exchange and friendship.
He expressed his belief that the event would help foster lasting partnerships and strengthen ties among universities and young people from different countries. He added that all participants would give their best on the court, contribute to exciting and competitive matches, and make full use of the opportunity to connect with one another, promoting mutual understanding and friendship among youth from China and around the world.


Following the remarks, representatives of the referees and athletes took the official oath, pledging to uphold the rules of the competition, maintain the principles of fairness and integrity, and contribute to a tournament characterized by excellence, sportsmanship, and unity.

The opening ceremony also featured a variety of cultural and artistic performances, including a martial arts demonstration, the traditional “Lotus Dragon” dance—an element of intangible cultural heritage—and performances by the Jazz & Modern Dance Troupe. Blending traditional Chinese culture with youthful energy, the performances captivated the audience and brought the atmosphere of the event to a vibrant climax.

Following the opening ceremony, Dr.shawn chen performed the ceremonial tip-off, officially launching the tournament. The opening match featured a thrilling contest between the University of Melbourne from Australia and the University of Donja Gorica from Montenegro. With fast-paced offense, strong defensive play, and intense competition throughout, the game delivered a high-quality basketball showcase for spectators.


The six-day tournament will feature six teams competing in a round-robin format across 16 matches, culminating in a closing ceremony and friendship game on May 30.
Using basketball as a platform for connection, the tournament provides an excellent opportunity for young people from China and around the world to engage in both athletic competition and cultural exchange. The event highlights SIAS University’s commitment to international education and reflects the University’s open, inclusive, and globally oriented campus environment.
